ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Legacy system

Okay kiddo, let me explain what a legacy system is. Imagine your grandma's old computer that still runs on Windows 95. It's so old that it might not be compatible with new software and might not have new features like faster internet speed, better graphics, or smooth performance. This computer is an example of a legacy system.

Similarly, in the world of grown-ups, companies have computer systems that are old and outdated. These systems might be difficult to use, slow, and might not support new features. They are called legacy systems because they're outdated and need to be replaced with new ones.

But replacing these systems is not easy as it sounds, just like mamma can't buy a new window every time one gets dirty. Companies have invested a lot of time and money on these systems over the years, and replacing them is not only expensive but complicated too. They have lots of data stored in them, which cannot be transferred easily.

So they keep using these old systems even though new, more advanced systems are available. They are like old buildings, which even after so many years are still in use but require more maintenance than new modern buildings.
