Legal interpretation in South Africa

Legal interpretation in South Africa means understanding and explaining what the law says and how it should be followed. This is important because laws are written in big, fancy words that can be hard for people to understand.

To help us understand these words, we have people called judges who read and explain the laws. When there is a disagreement about what the law means, the judges use legal interpretation to figure out the best way to understand and apply the law.

They do this by looking at the words used in the law and trying to understand what the people who wrote them meant. Sometimes they also look at the context in which the law was written, as well as what other laws or cases have said about similar issues.

Legal interpretation is very important because it helps ensure that the laws are fair and understandable to everyone. It also helps prevent people from breaking the law by accident because they didn't understand what it meant.

In South Africa, we have a Constitution that is the highest law in the land. This means that all other laws must follow the guidelines and principles set out in the Constitution. So, in addition to interpreting other laws, judges also interpret the Constitution to make sure that other laws are in line with it.
