Legal status of polygamy

Polygamy is when a person is married to more than one person at the same time. It is not legal in most countries, including the United States. That means that if you get married to more than one person you won't be able to get a marriage certificate or have a legally-recognized marriage. You could get in trouble with the police and may even go to jail.
