ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Legal technicality

A legal technicality is a rule or part of the law that affects the outcome of a legal proceeding. For example, if you got into a fight with someone and the police were called, the police might decide not to charge you with a crime because of a legal technicality. For example, maybe the police showed up late and did not see you do anything wrong, so the law says they cannot charge you because they weren't there in time.
