ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lehnsmann

Okay kiddo, let me explain what a "lehnsmann" is.

Imagine you have a very big garden, and you want to let someone take care of part of it because you don't have enough time or energy to do it all yourself. So you choose someone you trust, and you give them some tools and seeds and tell them exactly what you want them to do.

Now, imagine that instead of a garden, you have a whole country! A long time ago, in some countries in Europe, there were kings and queens who owned the entire country. They couldn't take care of it all by themselves, so they had to divide it up into smaller pieces to let other people help them. These smaller pieces were called "fiefdoms". And the person who was chosen to take care of a fiefdom was called a "lehnsmann".

A lehnsmann was kind of like a manager. They were responsible for making sure that the land was used properly and the taxes were paid to the king or queen. But they didn't own the land themselves; they were just borrowing it from the king or queen. They had to make sure they did a good job, or they could be kicked out and someone else would get their fiefdom.

So, in short, a lehnsmann was like a gardener for a big piece of land that belonged to a king or queen, and they had to make sure everything was taken care of properly so they wouldn't lose their job.
