ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lek (biology)

Okay kiddo, so in the animal world, there are some creatures who have a special way of finding a mate to have babies with. It's called a "lek".

Imagine you're playing a game of tag with your friends, and you're all lined up. But instead of regular tag, you have to try and tag the boy or girl you like the most. So all the boys are trying to impress the girls, and all the girls are watching and deciding which boy they like the best.

That's kind of how a lek works. Say there's a group of male birds all hanging out in one spot. Each bird has its own little area where it likes to show off to the females (also called "hens"). They might do things like sing, dance, or show off their feathers to try and impress the hens.

The hens come by and watch all the males do their thing, and then they pick the one they like the best to mate with. It's kind of like the hens are shopping for the perfect mate, and the males are trying to make the best sales pitch.

This might seem a little strange to us, but in the animal world, it's a really common way of finding a mate. Sometimes, leks can be really big, with lots of males and females all hanging out together. And sometimes, they can be really small, with just a few animals.

But one thing's for sure - if you're an animal looking for love, a lek is definitely the place to be!
