Leper colony stigma

Ok kiddo, imagine that there's a type of sickness called leprosy that makes people's skin look different and their body parts might not work properly. It's kinda like having a bad cold, but it never goes away and is a bit worse.

A long time ago, people didn't know how to treat leprosy very well, so they thought that if someone had it, they were really sick and could make others sick too. So, they decided to create a place just for people with leprosy, called a leper colony.

But even though the people in the leper colony weren't any more sick or dangerous than anyone else, some people were scared of them and thought they were gross. So, they started to treat people with leprosy differently and not let them live with everyone else.

This is called a stigma, which is like a label that people put on others that makes them feel bad. It's not fair or nice, but sometimes people do it because they don't understand something or they are afraid of something different.

Nowadays, we know how to treat leprosy, and we don't need to have leper colonies anymore. But sometimes people still think that leprosy is something to be scared of, which is not fair because people with leprosy can live regular lives just like anyone else. We should treat everyone with kindness and respect, no matter what they look like or what kind of sickness they might have.
