ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Letting die

Letting die means that someone doesn't do something to keep a person alive, even though they have the ability to do it.

For example, imagine someone has a bad disease that is making them really sick. A doctor might have a treatment that could make them better, but the treatment is very expensive and might not work very well. If the person's family decides not to pay for the treatment, and the person dies because they didn't get the treatment, that is called "letting them die."

Another example might be if someone is on life support in a hospital, which means machines are helping them breathe and keeping blood flowing through their body. If the person's family decides to turn off the life support, and the person dies because they can't breathe or their heart stops, that is also called "letting them die."

In some cases, people might decide to let someone die because they think it's the best thing for that person. For example, if an older person is very sick and doesn't want to be kept alive on machines, their family might decide not to put them on life support if they get really sick. In other cases, people might not have a choice because the treatment is too expensive or not available.

It's important to remember that letting someone die is a very serious decision, and people should think carefully about the consequences before making that choice. In some cases, it might be the right thing to do, but in others, it might not be.
