ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Levi's lemma

So kiddo, have you ever heard of something called the “Levi's Lemma?” It's a little complicated, but I'll try my best to explain it to you!

Imagine you have a set of things, like toys, and you want to count how many ways you can group them together. The Levi's Lemma is a way to help you figure this out.

Let's say you have two sets of toys, set A and set B. Now, suppose you want to group them together in a certain way. The Levi's Lemma tells us that we can count the total number of ways to group them together by first looking at all the possible ways to group just set A by itself, and all the possible ways to group set B by itself.

Then, we can multiply those two numbers together to get the total number of ways to group both sets of toys. This might sound a little strange, but think about it like this: if you have two sets of toys and you know all the ways you can group each set, then you can just combine those groups in every possible way to get all the overall groups.

Here's an example. Let's say you have three toys in set A (a ball, a car, and a teddy bear) and two toys in set B (a doll and a puzzle). If you want to group them in pairs (so that each group has two toys), how many ways can you do it?

Well, first we count the ways to group set A by itself: there are three toys, so we can group them like this:

- Ball and car
- Ball and teddy bear
- Car and teddy bear

So there are three ways to group the toys in set A. Now, let's count the ways to group set B by itself: there are two toys, so we can group them like this:

- Doll and puzzle

So there's only one way to group the toys in set B.

Now, we can use the Levi's Lemma to figure out the total number of ways to group both sets of toys. We just multiply the number of ways to group set A (3) by the number of ways to group set B (1):

3 x 1 = 3

So there are three total ways to group both sets of toys into pairs. These are:

- Ball and car with doll and puzzle
- Ball and teddy bear with doll and puzzle
- Car and teddy bear with doll and puzzle

Pretty neat, huh?! That's the Levi's Lemma – a way to count the total number of ways to group things together by looking at all the ways to group each part separately and multiplying them together.
