ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lexical category

A lexical category is a type of word that we use to communicate. Different words do different things, just like different toys are used for different activities. Some types of words name things, like "cat" or "apple". We call these words nouns, and they are the first lexical category.

Other words describe actions, like "run" or "jump". These words are called verbs, and they are the second lexical category. Some words can also describe how something or someone feels, like "happy" or "angry". These words are called adjectives, and they are the third lexical category.

Words can also describe how an action is being done, like "quickly" or "slowly". These words are called adverbs and they are the fourth lexical category. We can use them to modify a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

Lastly, there are some small words that we use to connect bigger statements or ideas, like "and" or "because". These are called conjunctions, and they are the fifth lexical category.

So, when we talk, we use different types of words, each with their own function, and they all fit into one of these five categories.
