ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lexicon

A lexicon is like a big book of words that people use. It has words that you know and words that you might not have heard of yet. Think of it like a big treasure chest filled with shiny jewels, but instead of jewels, it's filled with words! Just like you need a key to open a treasure chest, you need to know how to read to use a lexicon.

When we learn to read and write, we start with the alphabet. A is the first letter, then B, then C, and so on. These letters are like building blocks that we use to create words. Words are like little puzzles made up of different letters. When you put letters together, they form a word.

For example, let's take the word "cat." C-A-T, put together, makes the word "cat." There are lots of other words you can make with the letters "c," "a," and "t," but when we put them together in that order, it makes the word "cat." When we find a word we don't know, we can look it up in the lexicon to find out what it means.

The lexicon is also helpful because it can tell you how to use words correctly in a sentence. It will show you how to spell the word, its meaning, and how to say it out loud. It's like a really smart friend you can ask for help when you need it.

So, a lexicon is a book that has lots of words in it. These words are like little puzzles made from letters. When we read and learn new words, we can use a lexicon to help us learn their meanings and how to use them correctly.
