Liberty is like a superhero! She symbolizes the freedom that people have to make choices and live their lives the way they want, as long as they are not hurting others. She wears a big, tall hat called a "phrygian cap" and carries a torch and a tablet called a "tabula ansata". Her torch means that with freedom comes light, or knowledge, and her tablet has a date on it which represents important laws that protect people's rights. Sometimes you might see her standing on a big rock called a "pedestal" because she is strong and represents the power of the people. So whenever you hear people talking about "Lady Liberty" or see a statue of a lady with a big hat and a torch, you know they are talking about the idea that people should have the freedom to be themselves and live without fear of someone else hurting them or taking away their rights!
