ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Light-emitting diode

A light-emitting diode, also called an LED, is a tiny light that shines very brightly and comes in different colors. It's like a very small light bulb that lights up when you attach electricity to it.

Inside an LED, there are two important parts called the "p" and "n" regions. These regions are made of special materials and have different charges. When electricity flows through the LED, it jumps from one region to the other, releasing energy in the form of light. This is how the LED creates light.

LEDs are used in many different things such as televisions, traffic lights, flashlights, and even in toys like glow sticks. The best part is that LED lights use very little energy and last for a very long time, which makes them very efficient and good for the environment.

So next time you see a bright, colorful light, remember that it might be an LED working its magic!
