ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Linear scale

A linear scale is a way of dividing up a space or distance into equal parts. Think about a ruler. The ruler is divided up into inches, each inch is made up of smaller parts (1/2 inch, 1/4 inch, 1/8 inch), and each of those is made up of even smaller parts (1/16 inch, 1/32 inch). When we put it all together, we are dividing up the space into equal parts and that is what a linear scale is.
