ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Liquid air

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a balloon filled with air? Well, air is all around us and we breathe it in to stay alive! Sometimes instead of breathing in air we use it for different reasons like running a car, heating a house, or for big factories to make things.

But what if we cooled that air down so much that it turned into a liquid! That's what liquid air is, it's air but in a very very very cold and wet state.

Let's pretend we have a glass of water, but instead, it's filled with liquid air. When you look at it, it looks a bit like water, but it's not! It's actually really really cold - like -320 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 200 degrees lower than your home freezer.

What's cool about liquid air is that you can use it to create energy - it can be turned into fuel for cars! We can even use it to freeze things quickly like ice cream.

Sounds pretty amazing, right? Well, it is! But liquid air needs to be handled carefully because if it touches anything too warm or too much air is exposed to it, it can turn into a gas very quickly and create a big explosion! So, scientists and engineers always make sure they are trained and handle liquid air with respect.
