Listed building

A listed building is a special building that has been recognized by the government as being very important and historic. Think of it as a building that is like a celebrity - people want to keep it just the way it is because it's so special.

When a building is listed, it means that it is protected from being changed too much or destroyed. So if you were to try and paint the building a different color, or knock down a wall, or add a new extension, you would need to get special permission first.

Buildings can get listed for all sorts of reasons - maybe they are very old and rare, or maybe they are very famous and everyone loves them. Even if they aren't very old or famous, a building can still be listed if it is something special that people want to keep.

So just think of a listed building like a really important person. You wouldn't want to do anything to upset or harm them!
