Lithostratigraphy

Lithostratigraphy is like a storybook that tells us about the different layers of rocks in the ground. Just like we can look at a book and see different pages with different pictures and words, we can look at the layers of rocks and see how they are different from each other.

Imagine you are playing with some colorful play-dough. You stack one color on top of another and keep going until you have a big tower of play-dough. Each color represents a different layer, just like each page in a book. Now, if you were to cut the tower of play-dough in half, you would be able to see all the different colors and layers. This is kind of like what geologists do when they study rocks.

Geologists use special tools to study rocks and the layers of rocks. They look for things like color, size of the grains in the rock, and how compact the rock is. These are like clues that help the geologist figure out what the rocks are made of and how old they are.

So, just like we can read a story book and figure out what it's about, geologists can study rocks and figure out what they're made of and how old they are. And that's lithostratigraphy!
