ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Local number portability

Have you ever gotten a new phone number or lost your old one? It can be confusing to tell all your friends and family your new number. But with local number portability, you can keep your same phone number even if you switch phone companies!

Local number portability (LNP for short) is when you take your phone number with you when you switch phone companies. It's like taking your toys with you when you go over to your friend's house to play - they're still yours even though you're playing somewhere else.

Before LNP, if you changed phone companies, you would have to get a new phone number. This was super confusing for everyone you knew – and it was a pain for you too, because you had to learn a whole new phone number!

Now that we have LNP, you don't have to worry about losing your phone number. This makes it easier for you to keep in touch with all your friends, family and important contacts, even if you switch phone companies. And it helps to make sure you always have access to the same resources as before.

So, in short, LNP allows you to keep your phone number when you switch phone companies so that you always have access to the same resources and can easily stay in touch with all your contacts!
