ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Locked-in syndrome

Locked-in syndrome is when someone has a big problem with their brain and they cannot move their body almost at all, except for their eyes. They are "locked-in" to their own body.

It's like when you are playing your favorite game, and all of a sudden your computer or game console freezes and you can't move or do anything except look at the screen. Imagine feeling like that all the time, for the rest of your life.

People with locked-in syndrome still have their thoughts and their feelings. They can think and feel things as they always have, but they cannot tell anyone what they are thinking or feeling because they cannot move any part of their body other than their eyes.

This can happen because of a big problem in their brain, like a really bad stroke or an injury. Their brain stops working the way it should, and it cannot send messages to their body to move anymore.

Even though it might be hard for us to understand, it's important to be kind and patient with people who have locked-in syndrome. Just because they cannot move doesn't mean they do not understand or feel things like everyone else. We can still communicate with them through their eyes and show them love and support.
