ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

London shrunk

Have you ever taken a shirt out of the laundry and noticed that it's smaller than before? Well, that's what happened to London! Except, instead of a shirt, it's the land that makes up the city that got smaller.

You see, London has been around for a really long time, and over the years people have built lots of buildings and roads and things. All of that building has made the ground in London press together and become more compact.

Just like when you push your stuffed animals together on your bed, the tighter they are packed, the less space they take up. This is what happened to the land in London, it got smushed down and now takes up less space than it did before.

People have noticed that some buildings that were previously underground are now above ground! That's because the ground shrunk so much that it actually lowered the level of the streets and buildings.

But don't worry, even though London might be smaller now, it still has all of its amazing history and landmarks for us to explore and enjoy!
