ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Calendering (textiles)

Calendering is when we use a big, heavy rolling pin to make fabric nice and flat and smooth.

First, we take the fabric and feed it through a machine that has these big rollers, kind of like rolling pins. The rollers press down on the fabric really hard and make it thinner and flatter.

If we want a pattern on the fabric, we can put a special plate on the roller that will make those patterns on the fabric as it goes through the machine.

Calendering makes the fabric look really nice and smooth, and it can also make it shiny or water-resistant.
