ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Longitude

Okay, so you know how we live on a big round ball, right? Well, just like how we use lines to tell people where things are on a piece of paper, we use lines on the round ball to tell people where things are in the world. These lines are called latitude and longitude.

Longitude lines go up and down (north-south) around the Earth, kind of like climbing a ladder. They help us find our way on the planet.

Now let's imagine you are standing at your home and your friend lives on the other side of the world. You both want to know what time it is, but you live in a different time zone. Since the Earth is divided into 24 equal parts, we can have 24 different time zones.

At 0 degrees longitude, we have a line called the Prime Meridian, which is like the "starting line" because it is used to set the time for the whole world. This line is in London, England, and is used as a reference point to tell what time it is everywhere else.

So, if you and your friend know your longitude, then you can figure out the time difference between your two locations. Longitude helps us pinpoint locations on Earth and is important for navigation and finding our way around the world.

In simpler terms, longitude is like climbing a ladder to find your way around the Earth, and helps us tell time and find our way to different places.
