Louisiana used to be a part of a country called Spain a very long time ago, before you and I were born. It was a big area that included a lot of land and water in North America, near the Mississippi River. People from Spain came to Louisiana and started living there, making it their home. They had their own culture and way of doing things, like cooking different types of food and speaking a language called Spanish. It was called New Spain because it was a new area that Spain had just discovered and claimed as their own. Eventually, Louisiana became a part of the United States instead of Spain, but we can still learn about its history and the people who lived there a long time ago.
