ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Loving Day

Loving Day is a special day celebrated on June 12th every year to remember a really important thing that happened a long time ago. It's like a big birthday party, but instead of celebrating someone's birth, it's all about celebrating LOVE.

A long time ago, it was against the law for people of different races to get married and be in love with each other. But that didn't stop a couple named Richard and Mildred Loving from falling in love and wanting to get married.

So, they went to another state where it was okay for them to get married and then they moved back home. But even though they were married, they couldn't live together or even visit each other without getting in big trouble.

One day, they decided to stand up for their love and their rights, and they went to court to fight against the law that stopped people from marrying based on their race. And you know what? They won! The law was changed and people of all different races could finally marry whoever they loved.

Loving Day is celebrated to remember the bravery and love of Richard and Mildred Loving who helped make a difference in the world. It's a day to celebrate love, diversity, and the freedom to love who we want, no matter what anyone else may say.
