Alright kiddo, have you ever heard of the Māori people? They are the indigenous people of New Zealand, and they have a really cool history. One important part of their history is how they got to New Zealand in the first place.
A loooong time ago, before airplanes or cars, people had to travel using boats. The Māori people decided to leave their homeland in the Pacific Islands and travel to New Zealand, but they didn't have big fancy ships like we do today. Instead, they built special boats called "waka" (pronounced "wah-ka").
These waka were actually pretty big and could hold lots of people and supplies. They were made out of wood, and the Māori people had to work really hard to gather all of the materials and put them together. Some of the waka were so big that they had to be built in sections and then fit together like a puzzle once they were in the water.
The Māori people didn't just build one waka and hope for the best. They built lots of them, and each waka was named after an important ancestor or leader. The waka were also decorated with intricate carvings and designs that told stories about the people and their journey.
Once everything was ready, the Māori people set off on their long voyage to New Zealand. They had to be really careful because the journey was dangerous and the ocean could be unpredictable. They used the stars to navigate and had special songs and chants to keep them motivated and in good spirits.
Finally, after many months at sea, the Māori people arrived in New Zealand. They came with their waka and their traditions and culture, and they have been an important part of New Zealand ever since. So, that's the story of the Māori migration canoes!
