Mōdraniht

Mōdraniht is a really old word that means "mother's night". It comes from a time long ago when people didn't have the kind of calendar that we use now. So they marked the days and nights by the cycles of the moon and the seasons.

One night of the year, which is usually around Christmas time, was called Mōdraniht. The people who celebrated it were mostly from what is now called Germany, and they worshiped a goddess called Frigg or Freya. She was the goddess of love, fertility, and the home.

On Mōdraniht, people would light fires and make offerings of food and drink to Frigg or Freya. They would sing songs, tell stories, and sometimes even dance. It was a time to celebrate family and community, and to honor the goddess who protected them.

Even though we don't celebrate Mōdraniht like they did a long time ago, we can still remember how important it was for people to come together and show love and respect for their families and their gods.
