ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Madison Symmetric Torus

Imagine you have a big machine that can create a special kind of energy called plasma. This plasma is made up of really hot gas particles that are moving around really fast. Normally, people use magnets to control plasma and keep it in one place. But the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) is a special kind of machine that doesn't need magnets to control the plasma. Instead, it uses something called an "electromagnetic field" that is created by sending electrical currents through a bunch of wires. These wires are arranged in a loop that spins around like a donut. The plasma is put inside the center of the loop, and the electromagnetic field keeps it in one place so it doesn't touch the sides or escape. Scientists study the MST to learn more about how plasma works and how it can be used to create energy in the future!
