A patent is a kind of law that protects inventions. An inventor can get a patent to stop people from using or copying their invention without their permission. A patent also stops other people from making, selling, or importing the invention for a certain amount of time. That way, the inventor gets to be the only one who can make money from the invention for a set period of time.
