ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Main-group element-mediated activation of dinitrogen

Have you ever seen a balloon that is blown up with air? Nitrogen gas is kind of like the air that fills up the balloon. But did you know that nitrogen gas is really hard to use? It’s all because the nitrogen molecules are stuck together really tightly, which means they don’t like to react with other things. This is why we need to activate nitrogen so we can use it in things like making fertilizer for plants to grow.

Scientists use special metal elements from groups 1, 2, and 13 on the periodic table, because these metals can help break apart the nitrogen molecules so they can be used. It’s like when you use scissors to cut a piece of paper – you can’t do it with your hands because the paper is too strong.

The metal elements work kind of like a superhero who has the special ability to break apart the nitrogen molecules. They grab on and pull the nitrogen apart into smaller parts. That makes it a lot easier for us to use nitrogen to make things like fertilizer.

This is really important because plants need nitrogen to grow strong and healthy. So, by activating nitrogen, we can help make sure that plants have what they need to grow big and strong – just like you need lots of healthy food to grow up big and strong too!
