Mains (Scotland)

Mains in Scotland is the word that means the system that brings water and electricity into homes and businesses. Just like a straw helps you drink your juice, the mains help bring water to your taps and electricity to your lights. The water mains are big pipes that go under the ground, like a secret tunnel that the water travels through to get to your house. When you turn on the tap, the water comes out of the mains, through the pipes in your house, and out of the tap. The electricity mains are also big wires that go under the ground or on poles - like a string that connects your house to the power station. When you turn on a switch, electricity travels through the wires in your house and powers up your lights or appliances. So, mains is just the system that brings water and electricity to your house!
