Maple syrup is a sweet and sticky liquid that comes from trees called maple trees. These trees are found in places like North America and Canada. When the tree is full of sap, which is a watery liquid that can be turned into maple syrup, people drill a small hole into the tree's trunk and put in a spout. The sap drips out of the spout and into a bucket that is hanging on the spout. Then, people collect the sap from the bucket and store it in big containers.
After collecting the sap, it needs to be boiled. Normally, one of the tricks when making maple syrup is to boil it at a very high temperature. Boiling is done so that most of the water in the sap evaporates to leave a thick and syrupy substance that tastes sweet. This cooking takes a while because maple syrup is made by evaporating about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup!
Finally, after boiling, the syrup is removed from the heat source and taken to be put into bottles or cans. Then, people can buy it and eat it for breakfast on pancakes, waffles, or French toast. People also use it for baking and cooking because it makes desserts taste yummy! Yum!
