Maquis (World War II)

During World War II, there were groups of people called the Maquis (pronounced MAH-kee). These were resisters who fought against the Nazis and their allies in France.

Imagine a big game of hide-and-seek. The Nazis were "it" and they wanted to find and capture as many people as possible to send them to concentration camps or force them to work for the Nazis. The Maquis were "hiders" who didn't want to be caught, so they formed secret groups and lived in the forest, mountains, and other hidden places.

The Maquis were everyday people like farmers, teachers, and shopkeepers who didn't want to live under Nazi rule. They helped the Allied forces by gathering information, sabotaging Nazi operations, and even fighting against them.

However, the Maquis had to be very careful. They couldn't trust anyone who wasn't part of their group because they might be working for the Nazis. They had to communicate in secret codes and be ready to move quickly if they were discovered.

Despite the risks, the Maquis were brave and determined. They helped the Allied forces succeed in their fight against the Nazis and earned the respect and admiration of people around the world.
