Mardi Gras beads are colorful necklaces that people often wear during the Mardi Gras celebration, which is a big party in Louisiana in the United States!
The beads are made of small plastic or glass balls that come in lots of different colors, like purple, green, and gold. Like a magic trick, the beads are strung together on a string or wire, usually in a pattern of three beads of one color followed by one bead of another color (like purple, green, and gold repeated over and over).
During Mardi Gras, people usually stand on the side of the street and yell to the people on the floats, asking them to toss them beads! The people on the floats then throw the beads to the people below. If you catch the beads, you get to keep them!
The tradition of giving out beads during Mardi Gras started a long time ago, and people used to just throw random things like flowers and coconuts from their floats. The bead tradition caught on, and now it's a big part of the Mardi Gras fun!
