ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Marginalia

Marginalia means writing or drawing on the sides of a page of a book or paper. It is like when you draw a picture in the margin of your notebook in class. Grown-ups do it too! Sometimes, when they are reading a book, they think of something they want to remember or a question they want to ask. They write it down in the margin so they can remember later.

Marginalia can be helpful because it can help people understand what they are reading more. It is like having a conversation with the book or the paper. Sometimes people even draw pictures to help them remember or understand better.

But be careful! Not all books or papers are meant to be written on. Some are very special and should not be marked on. So always ask before you start drawing or writing in the margins.
