Mars Global Surveyor was a spacecraft sent to explore the planet Mars. It was launched in 1996 and it spent over three years orbiting the planet and sending pictures of the surface back to Earth. It also measured the shapes of the Martian mountains and collected data about the planet's atmosphere. In total, it mapped about 98 percent of the Martian surface. It helped us to learn lots of new things about Mars and showed us more about what it looks like.
