ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mary Ainsworth

Mary Ainsworth was a very smart lady who studied babies and how they interact with their parents. She wanted to know how babies feel safe and loved by their parents, and how they learn to trust the people around them.

To do this, she created something called the "strange situation" test. This test involved bringing a baby and their parent into a room with toys and letting them play together. Then, the parent would leave the room for a little while and come back. Mary Ainsworth watched how the baby reacted to the parent leaving and coming back.

She noticed that some babies were very upset when their parent left and were not easily comforted when they came back. Other babies were able to play by themselves and didn't get too upset when their parent left. These babies were also easily comforted when their parent returned.

Mary Ainsworth used these observations to come up with different categories of attachment. Babies who were easily comforted were called "securely attached" because they felt safe and loved by their parent. Babies who were very upset when their parent left and couldn't be comforted were called "insecurely attached."

Mary Ainsworth's research helped us understand the importance of a parent's love and presence in a baby's life. It also helped parents learn how to create a safe and loving environment for their children by being there for them and responding to their needs.
