Matroneum

A matroneum is a special kind of balcony that some churches have. It's like a little room that's up high near the front of the church. It's usually only for women and it's a special place for them to sit and watch the church services.

Back in the olden days, women and men had to sit separate in church. So if a church was really crowded, the women might not be able to see or hear as well from their seats. That's when they came up with the idea to build a matroneum.

The matroneum is usually decorated really nicely, with pretty flowers and colors. It's also a quiet place to pray and think during the service. So if a church has a matroneum, it's like a special room that the ladies get to hang out in and be part of the church service.
