So, in Matthew 2, there are three wise men who follow a big, bright star that shows them the way to a baby that has just been born. They bring gifts for the baby, but they also tell the ruler of the land, King Herod, about the baby and where he is.
King Herod gets very nervous and scared because he thinks the baby might grow up to be a new king and maybe take over his throne. So he asks the wise men to come back to him after they find the baby, so he can also go and see the baby and give him gifts too.
The wise men do find the baby and they worship him, but instead of going back to Herod, they have a dream that tells them not to go back to him. They are afraid of what Herod might do to the baby, so they take a different way home to avoid him.
Later, an angel appears to Joseph, who is the baby's father, in a dream and tells him to take his family and flee to Egypt. King Herod hears that the baby is gone, and he is very angry about it. He orders his soldiers to kill all the male babies in Bethlehem who are two years old or younger, just to make sure the baby they were looking for is gone.
But Joseph and his family are safe in Egypt until Herod dies. When they hear he has died, they return to their home in Nazareth.
So, in summary, Matthew 2 tells the story of three wise men who find the baby Jesus and bring him gifts, but also get King Herod worried about him. The wise men avoid Herod and Joseph and his family flee to Egypt to avoid being hurt by him. Eventually, they return home to Nazareth safely.
