ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mechanical counter

A mechanical counter is a special device that you can use to keep track of things that you want to count. Imagine you want to count how many times you jump up and down. You could use a mechanical counter to do this.

The mechanical counter has a small wheel inside that has special teeth on it. When you press a button on the counter, the teeth on the wheel will move one space forward. Each time you press the button, the teeth will move one space forward, and the counter will increase the number it shows by one. So if you pressed the button five times, the counter would show the number 5.

The mechanical counter works sort of like a tiny clock, where instead of telling time, it tells you how many times you've pressed the button. It's a really useful and simple way to count things!
