ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Media portrayals of the Canadian Indian residential school system

So, you know how there are stories and movies and TV shows that tell us about things that happened a long time ago? Well, some of these stories and pictures and videos have shown us what life was like for Indian kids who went to school in Canada many years ago.

Now, these Indian schools were not like the schools you go to today. They were very different and this is why some people think they were bad. You see, some kids were forced to leave their families and go to these schools where they were not allowed to speak their own language, wear their own clothes, or practice their own traditions. They had to follow many rules that were different from what they knew, and they were punished if they didn't follow these rules.

Some of the people who went to these schools have said that they were not happy there. They missed their families and friends, and did not like being told how to live their lives. Some of them were treated badly by the people who ran the schools, and they did not have the freedom to leave if they wanted to.

The media have shown us these stories and pictures and videos so that we can learn about what happened in the Indian schools in Canada. They want us to know that it was not a good time for many children, and that we should learn from this history so that we can make sure it never happens again.
