Medieval household

A long time ago, in the days known as "medieval", most people lived in groups called "households". Think of a household like a big family. A household was usually made up of a husband, a wife, their children, and often their extended family like grandparents, uncles, and cousins.

The household was the center of life for most people during the medieval times. Everything happened at home such as cooking, cleaning, and farming. The basic necessities of a home like food, clothing, and shelter were made within the household. They grew their own vegetables, raised their own animals for food and clothing, and made their own clothes.

The household usually had a leader, known as the "head of the household". This person was typically the oldest and wisest member of the family, usually the grandfather. The head of the household was responsible for making important decisions that affected everyone in the household.

The household was also where children were raised and educated. In those days, there were usually no schools, so fathers or family members taught the children what they needed to know. They learned how to read, write, and do basic math. Many also learned how to farm, sew, and cook as these skills were essential for survival.
