ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Melanogenesis

Melanogenesis is like a coloring activity that happens in our skin to make it look different colors. The special color that is made is called melanin. Melanin kind of looks like little pieces of salt or pepper.

Our skin has special cells called melanocytes that are like artists. These artists use a special tool called tyrosinase to create melanin. Tyrosinase is like a magic wand that makes the color appear.

Have you ever been in the sun for a long time and noticed your skin getting darker? That's because your melanocytes are working extra hard to make more melanin to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. This is why some people have darker skin than others.

Melanogenesis can also happen when we have a cut or a bruise. The melanocytes are like first aid helpers and they rush to the area of the cut or bruise to make more melanin. This helps protect the skin as it heals.

So basically, melanogenesis is the process of creating a special color called melanin in our skin using special cells called melanocytes and a magic tool called tyrosinase. And this is what makes our skin look different colors.
