Merlon

Okay kiddo, so imagine you have a castle. The walls of the castle are really important because they protect everything inside, right? But have you noticed that the walls have little parts sticking out like teeth? Those are called merlons.

Merlons are like a special type of tooth that stick up above the rest of the wall. They’re usually shaped like a rectangle or a square, and they have a gap in between each merlon. This gap is called a crenel.

Now, merlons and crenels might seem like just a cool design on a castle wall, but they actually have a very important job! You see, back in the olden days, when ancient castles were being built, they didn’t have guns or cannons to defend themselves.

Instead, they had archers who would stand on top of the castle walls and shoot arrows at the enemies. The merlons on the walls were perfect for this because the archers could hide behind them and then pop up to shoot arrows through the gaps.

The crenels were also really useful because the archers could stick their arrows through them to aim at the enemies below without exposing themselves too much.

So, that’s merlons in a nutshell, kiddo. They’re little teeth that stick out above a castle wall, and they were really useful for archers in the olden days. Cool, huh?
