ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mesh network

Imagine you're playing with your friends outside and you want to play a game of telephone. You line up in a circle and whisper a message to the person next to you. They whisper it to the person next to them, and so on, until it gets back to you. This is like a mesh network!

A mesh network is a bunch of devices, like phones or computers, that talk to each other to send messages. Instead of one device trying to talk directly to another far away device, they pass the message through other devices in the network until it gets to where it needs to go. Just like in our game of telephone, each device passes the message along until it reaches its destination.

This is really helpful in situations where devices can't talk to each other directly. For example, if you are out in the woods camping and there is no cell phone service, you and your friend's phones could make their own mesh network to talk to each other. They might not be able to talk to the outside world, but they can still communicate with each other.

Mesh networks can also be useful in cities or buildings where there are lots of obstacles or long distances between devices. By using other devices as "relay points" to pass messages through, a mesh network can cover a larger area than would be possible with normal direct communication.

So, a mesh network is like a game of telephone where devices talk to each other to send messages, passing them along until they reach their destination. It helps devices communicate in situations where they can't talk to each other directly, and can cover larger areas with many obstacles or long distances.
