ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Meson

Okay, kiddo. So let's say that you have two blocks - one red and one blue. When you try to push them closer together, they will be attracted to each other and stick together, just like magnets.

Similarly, in science, there are particles called protons and neutrons inside atoms that are attracted to each other by a special force called the strong nuclear force. And to explain how this force works, scientists came up with the concept of mesons.

Imagine that mesons are like little particles that carry a message from one proton or neutron to the other, telling them to stick together. When they reach the other particle, they exchange this message, which causes a very strong attraction between them, making them stick together like glue.

But this exchange of messages is not just happening randomly. There are different types of mesons, like pions, kaons or rho mesons, and their messages are coded in a special language called quantum mechanics.

So you can think of mesons as tiny messengers that help keep the nucleus of an atom together. Without these messengers, the forces inside the nucleus would become too weak, causing it to fall apart.

And that, my dear child, is what mesons are all about.
