ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Meteorological instrumentation

Meteorological instrumentation is when we use special tools to measure and record things like the weather outside. These tools help us understand what is happening with the weather, so we can predict what will happen next.

There are many types of meteorological instruments, but some of the most common ones include:

- Thermometers: These tell us how hot or cold the air is. They have a special liquid inside that expands when it gets hot and shrinks when it gets cold. The thermometer shows us how much the liquid has expanded or shrunk, so we know the temperature.

- Barometers: These tell us how much pressure there is in the air. When the air is high pressure, it usually means we will have good weather. When the air is low pressure, it usually means we will have bad weather.

- Anemometers: These tell us how fast the wind is blowing. They have special cups on them that spin when the wind blows past. The anemometer tells us how fast the cups are spinning, so we know how fast the wind is.

- Rain gauges: These tell us how much rain has fallen. They have a special container that collects the rain. We can measure how much water is in the container, so we know how much rain there was.

- Weather balloons: These are big balloons that we send up into the air. They have special instruments on them that measure things like temperature, humidity, and pressure. We can use this information to understand what the weather is like in different parts of the sky.

All of these instruments help us learn about the weather, so we can make predictions about what will happen next. By understanding the weather, we can better prepare for things like storms, hurricanes, and other natural disasters.
