ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Methyl group

A methyl group is like a tiny little building block that we can find all over the place. It's made up of just one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms.

Imagine a Lego set where each brick is a different color. The red brick represents the carbon atom, and then we add three white bricks, representing the hydrogen atoms, to make up the methyl group.

We can find this little building block in many different things around us, like in the air we breathe or the food we eat. It's very important in biology because it can change the way that some things work in our bodies.

Scientists study methyl groups to learn more about how living things work and also to create new medicines to treat diseases. So, even though it's a little, simple thing, the methyl group is very important and helpful for us to understand.
