ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Metric Martyrs

Imagine you are playing a game, and the game has rules that all the players have to follow. Now imagine that the people who make the rules decide to change one of the rules in the middle of the game. This can be confusing and unfair, right?

Well, something like that happened in England in the late 1990s. The government decided that everyone in the country should start using a different system of measurement called the metric system. Instead of measuring things in inches, feet, and pounds, they wanted people to use meters, centimeters, and grams.

Most people didn't really mind this change, but some people who had been running shops for a long time were worried. They had always used the old system of measurement, and they didn't want to have to re-learn everything. They also didn't want to have to spend lots of money on new scales and signs for their shops.

These people became known as the "metric martyrs." They decided to keep using the old system of measurement, even though it was technically against the law. They thought it was unfair that they were being forced to change something that had worked perfectly well for them for years.

Some of the metric martyrs got into trouble with the police and had to go to court, but they refused to back down. Eventually, the government realized that it wasn't fair to punish these small business owners for something that was really just a matter of preference. So they changed the law and allowed people to use either system of measurement.

The metric martyrs showed that sometimes it's important to stand up for what you believe in, even if other people don't agree with you. And sometimes, if you do it in the right way, you can actually change the rules of the game.
