ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mimetic theory

Okay kiddo, let me tell you about mimetic theory. Let's say you and your friends are playing together and there's a cool toy that everyone wants to play with. You all start to get angry with each other because you all want the toy and no one wants to share it. Mimetic theory says that this happens because we humans tend to copy each other's desires and behaviors. It's like a contagious feeling that spreads from person to person, just like when someone yawns and then suddenly everyone else yawns too.

So in the toy example, one child may have seen another child playing with the toy and suddenly they want to play with it too, and then everyone else wants to play with it as well. This creates conflict because everyone is trying to get what they want, which leads to fighting and pushing.

According to mimetic theory, this kind of behavior doesn't just happen with toys. It happens with lots of things, like wanting to wear the same clothes as your friends, or wanting to eat the same food as them. It can even happen on a larger scale, like when whole groups of people start to desire the same thing, like money or power.

Mimetic theory also says that this behavior can lead to violence and war because people start to see others as the enemy and try to fight against them. But, it doesn't have to be that way. If we learn to recognize this behavior in ourselves and others, we can work to control our desires and not let them lead us into conflict.

So, there you have it kiddo, mimetic theory is all about how we copy each other's desires and behaviors and how it can lead to conflict, but we can make things better by being aware of it and trying to control our own desires.
