ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Minor actinides

Okay kiddo, you know how scientists use really small things called atoms to make up everything in the world around us? Well, within each atom, there are even smaller things called particles. One of those particles is called a "neutron."

When we use atoms to create energy, we often have leftover particles like neutrons, and these particles can join together and form new atoms. Some of these new atoms are called "minor actinides."

Minor actinides are very important to understand because they can remain radioactive and dangerous for a really long time, like thousands of years. If we don't figure out what to do with them, they could cause harm to people and the environment.

Scientists are working on ways to safely store or even get rid of minor actinides, so we can make sure this dangerous material doesn't hurt anyone. It's important to keep learning and researching so we can keep ourselves and the planet safe.
